UB Introduces Gender Neutral Housing

Over the past few years, colleges and universities across the nation of introduced ‘gender-neutral housing.’? The University at Buffalo, however, is the first in Western New York to introduce this type of housing, which will allow students of different sexes share apartments and dorms.? In a statement, UB said that the move was meant to allow students to “make their own decisions responsibly” and give them chance to live with “who [they] feel most comfortable [with].”? Proponents of the move believe that it will allow LGBTQ students and others to move in with friends.? In fact, part of the reason behind the change was to allow safer housing for those students identifying as LGBTQ The only problem they foresee is the same traditional roommate scuffles– especially when roommates are romantically involved.? But thus far, the program has been successful, with spaces in these apartments and dorms already full, and until the fall, we can’t be sure if that success will change.
