The Future of Buffalo’s Grain Elevators

On June 5 the Cargill Pool Grain Elevator will go up for auction to the public– and it looks as if the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. isn’t going to take part in bidding. What does this mean for the future of the structure? ?It could be any number of things,? owner Cash Cunningham said. ?Anyone creative can do something, even if just for large billboards.?

What Cunningham plans to sell is likely to tempt a number of bidders: in addition to the structure, he is offering a 12.2-acre plot of land plus 6 acres of privately owned water, Lake Erie access on three sides, and proximity to Gallagher Beach and the Small Boat Harbor. He also notes that the sellers are willing to help finance the transaction.

Whoever buys the Cargill Pool Grain Elevator will change forever the face of Buffalo’s South side, and may even have a hand in the further development of the harbor.

The June 5 auction at 1515 Furhmann is set for 10 a.m.
